E31’s Schools & Sections
English 31 provides qualified, highly skilled and experienced teachers, with recognised specialisms in English and Humanities across the primary and secondary age range. They are well practiced within the field of bilingual education and share a commitment to designing and delivering successful schemes of work, which themselves are specifically adapted to the needs of the bilingual environment.
English 31’s teachers and overall programme are led by the Head of Section, Leslie Albiston. The Head of Section leads all three levels of English 31 provision, from Primaire to Collège to Lycée. Working in partnerships with the French host schools, English 31 offers an opportunity for children to progress through every grade of school and provides a coherent and seamless programme of English teaching. Moreover, your child will have the opportunity to advance alongside and with the help of his/her bilingual peers.
We are committed to academic excellence and place high expectations on our pupils in terms of aspiration, commitment and work ethic. We strive to combine the rigour of the French educational system with the creativity, and intellectual curiosity fostered in the best English teaching practice to create a dynamic and enriching learning environment.
Language and Literature lessons are complemented by History lessons, which offer another register of English and underpin language acquisition with cultural knowledge and experience. At secondary level English teaching is very often via the study of literature from the English canon and is designed to encourage an imaginative engagement with works of recognised quality. Pupils at all levels are encouraged to share their enthusiasm in the open exchange of ideas, thoughts and impressions for the literature they are studying both in speaking & listening and in reading & writing tasks.
The programme is designed to develop the full range of writing skills including transactional, imaginative, informative and persuasive writing. Pupils’ development is closely monitored and ultimately assessed by external examinations validated by Education Nationale and Cambridge University. Our programmes and teachers also offer a continuity that supports our pupils through both the French and English systems, especially when they join the programme from English speaking countries and/or families. English 31 classes are managed and delivered across all ages by the British Section, based in Victor Hugo, Colomiers.
Parents should be aware that in the French education system, year entry is 1 January to 31 December whereas in the UK it is 1 September to 31 August. This may affect and potentially change your child’s class affectation between the different systems.
